Crock-Pot SCCPVL600S Cook and Carry 6-Quart Manual Slow Cooker Review
The Crock-Pot SCCPVL600S is a large slow cooker that cooks food for seven or more folks at once including a six-pound roast thanks to its spacious 6-quart oval shaped stoneware cooking insert. It features a simple control knob with a choice between high, medium and low heat settings.
Although this slow cooker is simple in its operations, it can make plenty of intricate dishes such as stews, roasts, sauces, chilis etc. Furthermore, the Crock-Pot SCCPVL600S is portable thanks to its lid locking system that securely fits onto the slow cooker using hinges and latches so that your meal stays intact as you haul it around.
Crock-Pot SCCPVL600S Review
The Crock-Pot SCCPVL600S is marketed as a portable slow cooker with very simple features and only the basic offerings as a 6-quart slow cooker. We felt it was time to give this cooker a closer look having had good experiences with other Crock-pot models. It took only 2 days for our slow cooker to reach us and everything was well packaged, sealed and in prime condition. We got the crock-pot out, its insert and lid cleaned in a dishwasher prior to the first use.
Having read up on the instruction manual, which by the way is not very helpful, we decided to start by making a simple fish stew. We had tried previously on another Crock-pot model but felt that it had heated up too fast for the fish to come out in one piece. Now it was the turn of Crock-Pot SCCPVL600S.
The very first thing we noticed was the abysmally slow nature of the Crock-Pot SCCPVL600S. It took literally ages to reach the optimum cooking temperature but once it achieved the right temperatures, cooking seemed to progress with fluency.
Although, this is a minor complaint from our side, do understand that it also comes with one major advantage – your food will never burn even on the high setting because it takes so long to achieve the requisite temperature. Quite naturally, what ideally takes us just 4 hours, took over 5 hours in the Crock-Pot SCCPVL600S. Thankfully, at the end of this long drawn out waiting period, we were greeted to a well-cooked, delicious fish stew recipe, where the fish was intact.
That was certainly a surprise to us, which meant that this slow cooker could do many stovetop recipes justice unlike plenty other cheap slow cookers in the market.
Ever since, we recreated a perfect baked rice recipe, roast turkey and chilli jalapeno dish. Each time, it took a little longer but the result was always so much better than what we had gotten used to. Cleaning up is simple with the Crock-Pot SCCPVL600S as its stainless steel brushed exterior needs a simple wipe with the lid and insert being dishwasher safe.
One more design element that you ought to know is that the lid is secured tightly onto the slow cooker when you wish to move it around. This ensures against spills but don’t think it will stop anything from coming out if you invert the slow cooker.
There is a small vent on the lid for ventilation and exhaust. This tends to leak stuff out if it is agitated too much. In addition, you can’t close the lid down by locking its latches when it cooks as this will result in uneven temperatures inside.
